Beyond the pet policy

Picture the
everyday routine.

Compare the apartment itself, the route outside and the terms you’ll be agreeing to.

Getting outside, several times a day

On a tour, follow the route from the apartment to the street. Count the stairs, try the elevator and look at the building’s pet-access rules. A walk-up and an elevator building can feel very different with a dog, groceries and a rainy evening.

The walk beyond the front door

Walk the blocks you would actually use. Check crossings, traffic and the route to a permitted dog area rather than assuming a nearby park allows off-leash use. Review Boston’s pet rules and dog licensing guidance; nearby communities have their own requirements.

The written terms and total cost

Ask for the current written pet policy, any proposed pet-related charges and the full move-in cost before committing. For a condo rental, confirm both the owner’s and condominium association’s rules. Ask which animal records the property needs before sending documents.
