Two different housing projects
An August 2018 Boston City Properties article described approvals for two South End housing projects: a multi-building plan near Shawmut Avenue and Herald Street, and a separate co-living tower on Albany Street in the Ink Block area. The report presented them as part of a broader effort to add housing, including income-restricted homes, to the neighborhood.
The Shawmut plan joined The Davis Companies with the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and the Boston Chinese Evangelical Church. Its proposed components included a condominium tower, housing on association-owned land and an expanded church building with additional housing. The account identified 139 planned condominiums and 84 homes associated with the church expansion.
Housing and community uses
The community organizations were not interchangeable partners. The church sought more worship and activity space; the association envisioned space for services such as English classes, citizenship workshops, after-school care and summer programs. Those uses were part of the proposal alongside new homes.
The Albany Street plan was described as a single tower with 250 residential units and 327 co-living spaces. A co-living space is not necessarily a separate apartment, so the two figures should not be added together. The original report also used overlapping totals for the Shawmut components; the individual proposals do not establish a verified combined count.
