An office lease, not an HQ2 decision
In March 2018, Boston City Properties examined Amazon’s growing Boston office footprint and plans at Seaport Square. The expansion was separate from the company’s search for a second headquarters. A Boston office commitment did not establish that the city had won the HQ2 competition.
The article described an initial lease of approximately 430,000 square feet in Block L4, then presented as an 18-story building. Amazon also held an option to expand into neighboring Block L5, which was described as offering another 610,000 square feet. The option was not the same as a completed second lease.
Employment commitments and the wider footprint
The report discussed city incentives tied to job creation: a $5 million benefit associated with an initial 2,000 jobs and another potential $5 million if a further expansion added 2,000 more. These were conditions described in the historical account, not a verification that every job or incentive was realized.
Existing or planned Amazon locations in Cambridge, Back Bay and Fort Point provided context for the Seaport move. The article also considered Suffolk Downs as a possible HQ2 site and compared alternative development concepts there. Those scenarios were proposals, not the final identity or approved use of every parcel.
Reading an expansion announcement
The useful distinction is between space committed in a lease, space reserved as an option and a speculative headquarters proposal. The March 2018 account captured all three at a moment when Boston’s office development pipeline and the national HQ2 competition were attracting attention.
