Compare the Cambridge layout with your daily routine.

A Harvard or MIT destination?

If you need to reach Harvard University, MIT or another Cambridge address, send the exact destination and the times you will travel. Check the walking route, transit trip or drive from each home you are considering. A citywide location does not guarantee a short trip or a convenient transit stop.

Include the errands and activities that matter to you, such as a library, museum or outdoor route. Compare them from the home’s actual entrance, and check how you will get there rather than relying on a broad description of city amenities.

Older character or a newer floor plan?

Compare the stairs, entrances and room sizes in an older home with the layout of a newer one. If a listing mentions a loft, open living area or entry room, look at whether that space can serve your home office, dining or storage needs. Check natural light and usable space during a viewing, not just the photos.

Ask which heating and cooling equipment serves the home, its condition and who maintains it. A remodeled kitchen, hardwood floor or updated bathroom does not establish the condition of the rest of the property.

Which features come with this home?

Confirm whether a parking space, garage, covered patio or storage area belongs to the home and whether its use has conditions. Measure kitchen work space, closets and pantry storage against what you need. Do not assume that features described in another Cambridge listing are included in this one.

If a property is described as a freestanding townhome, review its ownership documents and maintenance arrangements. Ask who is responsible for the exterior, roof, grounds and shared systems, and whether association rules apply.

Compare costs before deciding

Build your budget around the mortgage payment, property taxes, insurance, any association charges, utilities and maintenance—not the purchase price alone. Ask what an association fee covers and whether planned work or an assessment could add to your costs. Your lender and attorney can help review financing and the documents for the particular home.

The CFPB home-purchase budget guide explains expenses to include alongside the price.

A move or a property purchase?

Tell our buying team whether you are moving into the home yourself or coordinating a move for work. Include your expected purchase timing and the space you need. For help planning a move and deciding between rental and purchase options, see our Moving to Boston guide.

Ask about comparable sales, a viewing and the steps toward an offer. Financing and down-payment requirements depend on your situation and loan; an old market average does not determine what you will need to pay.

Talk through a Cambridge townhome purchase.

Send our buying team the listing or address, budget, room needs and timing. Ask about the home’s status, a viewing, comparable sales and preparing an offer. An inquiry does not reserve a property, submit an offer or approve financing.
