A school building adapted for living
The Coolidge Apartments occupies the former Calvin Coolidge school at 585 Main Street. Built in 1897 and converted to rental housing in the 1980 s, the building retains tall windows and distinctive historic architecture.
This is the Melrose community, not the similarly named age-restricted Coolidge School apartments in Watertown. Current management describes one-, two- and three-bedroom rental plans.
- One-, two- and three-bedroom plans
- Converted 1897 school building
- Large windows and historic details
- Downtown Melrose location
Layouts with individual character
The original guide describes loft and split-level arrangements as well as more conventional apartments. Tall ceilings and large windows are part of the building’s character, but the room arrangement varies.
Ask to see the actual plan, including stairs, ceiling heights and closet space. Current management advertises modern appliances and updated finishes; specific kitchen and bathroom details should be confirmed for the apartment.
Practical details to check
The legacy description lists shared laundry, washer/dryer hookups, parking and elevator access. These are worth checking together: a hookup is not the same as having machines supplied, and parking allocations can differ between leases.
Ask about the current pet policy, laundry equipment, heating and cooling, and any step-free access requirements. The older guide’s fixed cat limit and assigned-space counts have not been confirmed as current policy.
- Ask about the apartment’s laundry arrangement
- Confirm parking with the lease
- Check stairs and elevator access
