While it may have started as just farm land, the town quickly began to grow in the 19th century. During this time, it became one of the country's first streetcar suburbs.

Today, it retains the distinction of housing many of Boston's Emerald Necklace Parks. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, these parks provide the neighborhood with ample, beautiful green spaces.
