A request for development proposals
Boston City Properties reported in February 2020 that UMass Boston was seeking a developer for approximately 10 acres at Columbia Point in Dorchester. The university’s January 10 request included land near its campus entrance and the historic Calf Pasture Pumping Station.
The account described a possible 99-year ground lease, preservation of the pumping station and a role for the university within the reused building. February 19, 2020 was the reported proposal deadline, not the article’s exact publication date or a current opportunity to submit a bid.
Historic reuse and a separate waterfront deal
The pumping station dated to the 1880s and had been part of Boston’s sewage infrastructure. The article recalled the end of that use in 1968 and National Register recognition in 1990. Preserving the structure was a distinct question from how new mixed-use development might occupy the surrounding land.
The report also discussed the separate Bayside Expo property and its redevelopment arrangements. That larger waterfront deal should not be confused with the university’s 10-acre request. References to financing or tax incentives reflected the period’s discussion, not current tax advice, an open land listing or proof of a selected developer.
