Interest in outdoor space above the city
The October 2017 archive described roof decks as a sought-after feature in Boston housing. It attributed a count of approximately 2,500 decks to Inspectional Services official Brian Ronan, while recognizing that a reported count did not describe every structure or its approval status.
The feature considered why residents valued an outdoor place to sit, entertain or enjoy a different view of the city. That interest did not make a roof deck a requirement for every home.
Private decks and shared amenities
The account included neurologist Elie Sader as a resident example and discussed outdoor amenities at the Benjamin in the Seaport. A private home’s deck and a shared building terrace or pool were different types of space.
Furniture, planting, shade and outdoor gatherings appeared in the discussion. The article did not establish that every described installation was structurally suitable or permitted on every roof.
Development and practical questions
Patrick McMahon of Federal Realty Investment Trust appeared in the Assembly Row context. The article connected outdoor amenities with the way developers presented residential projects during that period.
This is historical lifestyle coverage, not construction or permission advice. The important distinctions include who controls the space, how it is reached, its approved use and maintenance responsibilities. The account does not guarantee an increase in resale value or current access to a named building’s roof.
