A vote enabling a mixed-use proposal
In March 2020, Boston City Properties reported that Newton voters had approved zoning changes connected with Northland’s Upper Falls development proposal. The approximately 22.6-acre site included 156 Oak Street, 275–281 Needham Street and 55 Tower Road.
The plan described 14 buildings ranging from three to eight stories and 800 apartments, including 120 affordable apartments. Approval of zoning changes was a step toward the project, not proof that all homes had been built or were available.
Commercial uses, open space and access
The account also described approximately 180,000 square feet of offices, 115,000 square feet of retail and community space, and 10 acres of privately owned public space. A shuttle connection to Newton Highlands station was part of the developer’s transportation commitment.
The article connected those commitments with public concerns about traffic and access. It also described a contribution toward local improvements. Income thresholds and construction schedules were part of the period’s plan, not current application criteria or guaranteed operating services.
