A Boston campus construction project

Boston City Properties reported in February 2020 that construction had begun on Boston University’s Center for Computing and Data Sciences at 645–665 Commonwealth Avenue. The project was on BU’s Boston campus; it should not be placed in Cambridge’s Kendall Square.

The article described an approximately $288 million, 350,000-square-foot building with a 19-story tower and a four-story podium. KPMB Architects designed the project, and Suffolk was identified with construction. BPDA approval had been reported in July 2019.

Interdisciplinary space and design goals

The building was intended to bring computing, mathematics, statistics and data-sciences work together. Its distinctive stacked form was a prominent part of the architecture discussion, while its energy systems were central to the sustainability goals.

Reported design features included geothermal energy, triple-glazed windows and solar shading. Carbon neutrality and the anticipated 2022 completion were project goals in the historical account, not independently verified performance or delivery results. The original visual was credited “Rendering Courtesy of KPMB.”
