An anticipated Government Center sale
In January 2020, Boston City Properties reported that Center Plaza was expected to be marketed for sale. The three-building office complex across from Government Center station had long housed the FBI’s New England headquarters before the agency moved in 2016.
The account identified a 2017 purchase by Synergy Investments and BentallGreenOak for $365 million. It described an expected sale price above $550 million in early 2020. That expectation was not a completed transaction or a verified sale result.
Renovation and occupancy
The owners were reported to have spent approximately $30 million renovating common areas and amenities. The article described occupancy increasing from roughly 60 percent at acquisition to about 90 percent, with technology-oriented tenants among the additions.
The complex’s approximately 740,000 square feet and transit access helped explain its position in the downtown office market. Contemporary rent and vacancy trends were part of the expected-sale discussion, but they did not guarantee a profit or establish current leasing opportunities. The story is about anticipated marketing in January 2020, not a property now offered for sale.
