Boston Yes and the headquarters competition
The October 2017 archive described Boston’s 218-page “Boston Yes” proposal for Amazon HQ2. The company had received 238 bids from cities and regions, and its request considered workforce, development capacity, costs and transportation.
The article discussed the possibility of a large corporate investment and substantial employment. Those possibilities were objectives of the search, not jobs already created in Boston.
A 161-acre site and phased campus
Suffolk Downs was presented as a 161-acre opportunity crossing Boston and Revere, with nearby Blue Line stations and airport access. The proposal discussed an initial 500,000 square feet of space by 2019 and expansion toward a much larger campus by 2027.
HYM’s mixed-use housing plan was also part of the argument. Proposed homes were not already available to Amazon employees. Likewise, the region’s universities were workforce context; their presence in Greater Boston did not place a university campus at Suffolk Downs.
Costs, universities and other employers
The bid discussion emphasized the supply of skilled workers, quality of life and the potential costs of development and operations. General Electric’s relocation appeared as a separate example of Boston’s efforts to attract an employer.
Those arguments did not independently establish a preferred location or the eventual effects on housing, commercial rents or public infrastructure.
Regional alternatives
The archive also described proposals from New Hampshire, Leominster, Worcester and the Haverhill–Lawrence–North Andover area. Their land and incentive offers had separate sponsors and conditions.
This historical account records the competition while it was unresolved. It is not a present headquarters announcement, an approved land-use plan or a list of available development parcels.
