Reusing a newspaper headquarters
A January 2020 Boston City Properties article described redevelopment of the former Boston Globe headquarters at 135 Morrissey Boulevard in Dorchester. Nordblom was converting the approximately 16.5-acre property into the Boston Exchange for Accelerated Technology, known as the BEAT.
The account described approximately 695,000 square feet of space, including about 360,000 square feet of office, light-industrial and laboratory uses. It recalled the newspaper’s departure in 2017 and redevelopment work underway since late 2018. The project name also echoed the idea of a newspaper reporter’s beat.
Proposed workplaces and shared amenities
The article discussed space for a craft brewery and beer garden, along with parking for 868 cars and 200 bicycles. The developer was seeking occupants, so prospective uses should not be read as signed leases or businesses already operating.
A reported $300 million rehabilitation and an anticipated July completion were part of the historical account. The central story was adaptive reuse of a large industrial-scale building for new employment uses. It did not establish today’s available space or prove that every proposed amenity opened.
