A venue and garage proposal
A December 2017 article described plans for a 4,000-seat concert venue at the HP Hood campus on Rutherford Avenue in Charlestown, together with a 775-car garage. Residential construction at 480 Rutherford Avenue and a neighboring office proposal formed part of the wider campus discussion.
The venue and restaurant were proposed for the garage’s ground floor, occupying approximately 75% and 25% of that floor respectively. No venue operator or restaurant tenant was named in the article.
The program and community uses
The report anticipated approximately 150 event nights annually, with around 50 sellouts. It framed the hall as a midsize addition to Boston’s performance spaces. Those were attendance assumptions, not actual ticket sales.
Charlestown Working Theatre was named among nonprofit organizations that might use the space. A proposed donation of $1 from merchandise sales to a Charlestown Neighborhood Council-approved nonprofit was discussed as a possible community contribution, not a completed agreement.
Traffic and noise concerns
The account discussed approximately 1,500 additional trips associated with events, especially during the evening. It considered walking, public transportation and carpooling as ways to reduce traffic, while noting concerns about people leaving late at night and parking on Baldwin Street.
A windowless building, double acoustic panels and a stage oriented toward the highway and recycling plant were proposed noise measures. They did not establish that neighbors would experience no noise or that traffic had been solved.
An unresolved schedule
The article anticipated garage and entertainment construction beginning in summer 2018 and mentioned an office tenant seeking space by 2020. One completion reference was written as “December July 2019,” leaving the intended month unclear. It is not corrected to a guessed date.
These were proposals undergoing review in 2017, not proof of a later venue identity, present event schedule or completed residential and office development.
