Boston City Properties' July 2015 article reported that The Davis Cos. acquired 112 Shawmut Avenue in Boston's South End for $26.2 million. The report described a six-story, 70,000-square-foot office building near Ink Block and Troy Boston.

The sale and ABCD's plans

The article identified the seller as Action for Boston Community Development, or ABCD. It reported that the nonprofit had bought the property in 1996 for $2.2 million and intended to use sale proceeds to repay debt and build new facilities.

At the time of the report, ABCD's South End Head Start and Early Head Start programs operated at 112 Shawmut. The article said they would move to 595 Harrison Avenue, the former Cathedral Grammar School, without pausing either program. It reported an $11-per-square-foot lease for that planned relocation. That historical figure is not a current lease offer.

What the article said about redevelopment

The original report said no official redevelopment plans had been released. It referred to the Boston Redevelopment Authority's 2012 rezoning of several nearby blocks and described office, retail, multifamily residential and hotel uses as permitted at the property then. The article alone does not establish today's permitted uses.

The report highlighted the building's industrial appearance, high ceilings, large windows and mushroom-shaped interior columns. It discussed loft-style offices, apartments or condos as possible uses—not approved projects. It placed the site in the South End's northeastern corner, about two blocks from Ink Block and Troy Boston.
