South End Studios
Boston's South End is one of the city's most colorful and creative neighborhoods. It's home to a large number of artists and émigrés who make it exceptionally unique. Formerly known for its warehouses and factories, this charming historic district has several well-known sub-neighborhoods, including the posh SoWa district.
South End Neighborhoods
Formerly known as South of Washington, the trendy SoWa district includes the neighborhood's southernmost streets. It's generally defined as the area starting at the intersection of Washington Street and East Berkeley and extending south to the intersection of Albany Street and Massachusetts Avenue. SoWa's legendary open-air market attracts farmers, crafters, artists, gourmet food trucks and shoppers from all parts of the city.
Other South End sub-neighborhoods include the Medical Area near Longwood, the Back Streets and the New York Streets. Each of these districts is home to historic apartments that are tucked away in Victorian bow-front homes and brick row houses. The South End also has a number of luxury condominiums and lofts located in warehouses used by piano builders, shoemakers and food distributors. Historic and modern studio apartments are near art galleries, quirky boutiques, cutting-edge design firms and high-end ethnic restaurants. Many of these businesses are clustered along Washington Street and Tremont Street, which is affectionately called Restaurant Row.
Life in the South End
Local residents have access to dozens of the neighborhood's green spaces and world-famous attractions. The South End is in the heart of Boston's cultural, medical and educational districts. The Boston Ballet, the Museum of Fine Art, the Boston Center for the Arts, Northeastern University, the Boston Medical Center, the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and the Boston University School of Public Health are all easily accessible. Apartments in the northern section are minutes from Copley Square, the Back Bay, Bay Village and prime shopping areas. The Massachusetts Turnpike, better known as I-90, is nearby for easy travel. This transportation artery is underground, so it's quiet and convenient.
