Located forty miles from Boston in Middlesex County, this town of 7,211 has 15.8 square miles of land that is ready for denser development projects. The historic core of the city, which was settled in 1720, is home to the 730 acre Shirley Shaker Village, an area that is frequented by tourists and other visitors, including architectural historians.
The town offers miles of unspoiled land perfect for those who relish nature. The Nashua and Squannacook Rivers form part of the city’s boundaries, which include numerous wetlands. Green space is therefore primarily concentrated around Tophet Swamp, Spruce Swamp, and the variety of parks in the area, such as Whitley Park, the Benjamin Hill Recreation Area, and the Fredonian Nature Center.
