North Reading rentals

The Middlesex County town of North Reading with a population of just under 15,000 was settled in 1651, and came into existence after the town of Reading obtained a land grant. North Reading was incorporated in 1853.

During its early years the economy grew on the self-sustaining farms, with a few cultivating hops, and by the late 1600s North Reading saw the arrival of the first saw and grist mills. Boot and shoe factories came to town on the early 1800s, and by the middle portion of the 19th century nearly every home included an attached addition for the sole purpose of making inexpensive shoes for use by slaves in the south. When the Civil War led to the elimination of this lucrative industry, the town turned to the land to boost its economy into the 20th century, with its chief products including locally cultivated fruit and milk.

,p>These days North Reading has its own public safety building to house its full-time fire department, police force and emergency vehicles, and the Flint Memorial Library has served citizens here since the renovated Flint Memorial Hall was dedicated as such in October 1991. The library was initiated by its namesake, Harriet Flint, in the late 1800s after she bought the building that later became the hall and set up a small library inside.

This suburban community, completely encased within the Ipswitch Rover watershed, has a number of historic homes that still grace its streets, with many of them going back to the early 1700s.
