The Longwood Medical Area is often referred to as the Longwood Medical and Academic area or simply Longwood by residents. This area is near Fenway and the town of Brookline. It is not an actual neighborhood by classification, but many people who attend the nearby medical universities rent apartments in this area.

Longwood Medical Area consists mainly of large brownstone buildings that accommodate the six hospitals and 12 college campuses located within this area. However, many of these large buildings offer apartments for local staff and students as well as other people who are interested in living in this community.

Apartments In Longwood Medical Area

Apartments in Longwood generally consist of small studio or one bedroom apartments. However, larger apartments do become available on occasion. Majority of these apartments are short term lease apartments because this is perfect for those attending these colleges or hospitals for training. Harvard Medical School uses many of these facilities as teaching hospitals.

Single family residences are located in nearby Brookline. The apartment buildings nearby are very community oriented and offer many amenities to the residents.

There are two Green Line Stations located in this area, one on each end of the community. Bus service is also located throughout the area for local and out-of-area service. Shuttle service is also offered between the hospital and Harvard Medical School for anyone carrying a Harvard ID card.

There are a few shops and cafes located within this neighborhood, but a majority of residents go to the nearby neighborhoods to enjoy food, shopping, and entertainment. There are a few non-medical businesses in the area as well as a few museums that residents can enjoy.

Longwood is closely associated with Harvard Medical School. However, other campuses in this area include Boston Latin School, Winsor School, Wheelock College, Emmanuel College, Simmons College, Northeastern University, Harvard Dental school, Harvard School for Public Health, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

The Longwood Medical Area contains the following hospitals within its community: Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center, Boston Children's Hospital, and Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering.

Many of the residents in this area are associated with one of the hospitals, research centers or colleges in the area. However, residents do not have to have one of these affiliations to obtain an apartment within the area.

The popularity of this area is causing a higher demand for apartment availability especially for temporary housing options. This neighborhood will continue to be very popular with those involved in the medical field. Students, staff, and researchers come to this area to live and work.
