With a population of just over 4,000, this town is a largely residential community. More than 30 percent of the city's land is under conservation restrictions. Great Brook Farm State Park is a popular tourist stop that's known for its farm-fresh homemade ice cream. The park is also one of New England's major cross-country ski areas.
European colonists first settled the area in 1651. Carlisle became an incorporated town in 1805. Part of the 3,800-acre Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is located here. Around 85 percent of the refuge consists of freshwater wetlands. The many trails in the refuge allow visitors to view and study the wildlife. Even during the winter, visitors can experience viewing wildlife on the trails by cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. More than 220 bird species have been seen within the refuge. Some species of waterfowl that nest in Great Meadows include mallards, wood and black ducks, blue-winged teal and great blue herons. Mammals that make their homes in the refuge include beaver, fisher, otter, muskrat, weasel, red fox, white-tailed deer and many smaller animals. Although there's a variety of amphibians and reptiles, there are, fortunately, no poisonous snakes. One of the Northeast's largest populations of the threatened Blanding's turtle lives in the refuge. Because it moves seasonally, this medium-sized freshwater reptile requires many different types of wetland habitats.
Held the weekend before July 4, the Carlisle Old Home Day is an annual event that includes an ice cream social, one- and five-mile road races, a formal flag raising, pie baking and cake decorating, a country fair, art show, frog-jumping contest, dunking booth, pet show, corn-shucking contest and three-legged and sack races on the green.
With all its natural beauty and the pride of its citizens, Carlisle is an excellent choice for investing in commercial property. As the growing U.S. economy creates optimism, tourists will look for new sights to visit, often those that don't attract thousands or even millions annually. The Northeast U.S. offers some very attractive vacation spots and without the crowds that regularly visit more popular amusement parks or warm-weather resorts. As New England vacationers look for ways to spend their time closer to home and free from the need to travel long distances and wait for hours in line for the TSA, they can be lured to local attractions with commercial development that focuses on the hospitality and retail services.
