History of the Vendome
Built in 1872, the Vendome was designed in a French second empire style of architecture by William G. Preston. It shares its design style with such buildings as Philadelphia City Hall, the Louvre Palace in France and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C. The development is impressive in its columns, arched entrance, mansard roof and dormer windows.
Originally a hotel, the Vendome is now home to luxury residential condos that feature oak and pine flooring and architectural details such as floor-to-ceiling windows, eight-foot solid doors and decorative fireplaces. The Vendome was the first large commercial building in the Back Bay area. In 1882 it become the first commercial building to install electrical lighting and was one of only three hotels in the United States to have electrical lighting.
