Recent Housing and Rental Market News
In recent development news, the site of the Benjamin's restaurant has received a complete makeover. The property was purchased by developers to create condominiums and single-family homes. The developers purchased the 3.25-acre lot in 2016 and completely demolished the 25,000-square-foot restaurant.
Placed at 698 Bay Street, this property was purchased after the originally owner defaulted on a mortgage. The winning bid for the land was $792,000. In the new plan, developers built three single-family homes on three of the four lots. The final lot was used to create a three-unit condominium property. Meanwhile, other lots at the property were transformed into three-bedroom, ranch-style homes. Previously, the developers at the project built the Knotty Pine subdivision within Dighton as well as the Segregansett Woods subdivision on Tremont Street.
Over the last few years, the community has watched the ongoing development of the Myles Standish Industrial Park. It started as the site of a former school. In 2002, the 220-acre site had to be cleaned and decontaminated before it could be used. Lawmakers set aside the land to create a 50-acre Life Sciences Business & Technology Park ads well as the new Life Science Training & Education Center.
The initial project did not initially attract any investors. In 2011, the government stepped in to help a non-profit transform the site. The new project received more than $6 million from federal and state grants. It has the space for 100 companies within the space. Including the new expansion, the property will have more than 1.9 square feet of development area.
In 2017, the city was also awarded a grant for $500,000. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency offered the grant to help clean up contaminated brownfield properties. With this money, the community can reuse vacant and contaminated areas. The city will use the money for properties like 100 Arlington Street. Once the sites are cleaned up, they can be transformed into recreation space, housing or similar community projects.
