The older properties in this region, some of which were originally constructed in 1795, have undergone extensive renovation while preserving much of the charm of their initial period. The kitchens, for example, are usually located in the rear of the property, and can be enormous rooms with wooden beams in the ceiling. While the appliances and cabinets are generally all of modern construction, sometimes a stone hearth or other original material will be preserved in the contemporary renovation. Some of these units feature the original hardwood floors, which have been varnished and refurbished to meet contemporary standards. Others replace the older flooring with tile or other materials, creating a warm and inviting place in which to prepare food and socialize. The windows here are often quite large and occasionally have arches or other historic details, such as specially treated panes of glass, which distinguish them from other properties.
Each of the rooms in these older homes are large but also walled off: open floor plans are rare in dwellings constructed before 1960. The walls themselves may be perforated or have built-in cabinets or other shelving, creating opportunities for glimpses of the other spaces, as well as an inventive display or objects and decor. Multiple fireplaces are common in these older homes, not only in the principal living space, but also in the bedrooms above.
The newer homes in this region tend to emphasize multiple stories and spacious, open layouts. Attached garages are common, and lead into great rooms that usually have a loft component. This allows for massive banks of windows that often span two stories or more, and create powerful light wells that illuminate the home. Creative attic spaces are common here: in many cases, a bedroom with sloping walls or a small office can be housed in the very top of the home, making it perfect for a child’s bedroom or a creative studio area.

Only 16 miles north of downtown Boston, this city has a relatively high urban density with a number of natural recreation areas. The Reading Town Forest, Cedar Swamp, Bare Meadow, Lob’s Pound Mill Site, a portion of the Nichols/Minuteman Site, the Kurchian Woods, the Birch Meadow Park, the verdant Town Common, and Timberneck Swamp are just some of the places in which a visitor or resident can relish some greenery and unwind. For Drivers who own a car, the city is accessible via Interstate 93, Route 28, and Route 129. One can find an express train Rail line station on the Haverhill Line that runs through the center of the city.
