The typical townhouse in this area occupies a large lot, with at least a quarter or half an acre of open land. In some developments, a shared lot of open land is placed in the center of a loose arrangement of units, creating a kind of pasture that all the neighbors can enjoy. In other cases, the homes are arranged either in pairs or as a single structure on a property, and these properties are woven into the fabric of a larger residential neighborhood, creating a diverse mix of architectural styles.

Whatever the specific exterior configuration, the interiors tend to be accessed by a front door that is sheltered by an overhang. The exterior siding is usually vinyl, although in some cases clapboard or brick are mixed in. An attached garage provides space for either a car or additional items, depending on the proclivities of the homeowner. The front door opens into a living room, which often has bay windows or a pronounced “front” which looks out over the street. This room typically has a fireplace, although this is not always placed into the wall. In some layouts, the fireplace is located in the center of the room within a wall that can be walked around on all sides, creating a kind of enclosed fire pit. This arrangement also makes it easy to maintain a steady sightline to the rest of the home, from the kitchen to the dining area and beyond. The floors are typically hardwood, although carpeting is often used as well.

The kitchens tend to have a small space off to the side which can be used as an informal dining area, perfect for breakfasts or snack times. The other side of the kitchen usually has a more pronounced dining space, with a rectilinear room or arrangement of lighting fixtures that indicates where a larger table should be placed. The kitchen itself is typically designed to have U-configuration, with two long counters reaching out from where the sink is placed. Brand new appliances are located within this space, and often have been designed to fit perfectly within the space allotted for them. A small island or workspace may be located in one of the arms of the U, although this area is just as often as not used for additional food preparation space.

Upstairs, the bedrooms are ample and roomy. Many have vaulted ceilings with skylights, or windows that span several stories, creating dramatic light wells and spectacular views. In some cases, a loft configuration will be substituted instead, creating an informal mezzanine that overlooks the principal living area. This loft area can be used as a bedroom or in some cases as an office. Depending on its size, it may become a second recreation and relaxation area, with plenty of room for desks, dressers, or other pieces of furniture.
