As one would expect, most of the homes here are set back from the street on their own private lots, which feature manicured lawns and shrubs closer to the house itself. An asphalt walkway leads to the front door, which is usually framed by a front porch that is surrounded by bright white banisters. In some instances, the front porch will be adorned with different types of furniture, including rocking chairs and end tables perfect for setting down a drink or magazine upon them. The entrance is often marked both with a glass door and a solid wooden door behind it, which makes it easier to access during the winter by keeping the cold out while allowing the view in. The foyer of the home often has a space for decorative display, such as a small table that has a number of exposed shelves perfect for placing greeting cards or a flowering plant upon. The foyer may be large enough to act as a kind of gallery space, with blank walls being perfect for the placement of photographs or other wall art.

Although many homes were built around 1920, the contemporary remodels have done away with many of the other walls, creating massive rooms that span from the kitchen all the way to the end of the living room. These spaces are not only spectacular to witness from the doorway, but also create a feeling of splendor and warmth the longer one stays within them. Although central air is favored as the means to both heat and cool most homes of this type, in some instances a fireplace or multiple fireplaces in different rooms may be found throughout the home. When a fireplace does exist, it is traditionally installed in the great room. Hearths may extend into the flooring, or be absent altogether. Some form of a mantle is usually included.

Split-level homes are not uncommon, and in many places a short flight of stairs ushers the visitor from the lobby space into the kitchen, which is equipped with a high countertop perfect for serving cocktails or displaying gorgeous visually appealing objects, including cookbooks and large ornamental vases. The kitchen itself tends to not only inspire feasts, but acts as a visual feast of its own. Numerous high-grade appliances with customizable programming and a variety of different compartments for food storage are located here, and offer visitors the chance to enjoy a professionally equipped kitchen.

Short Sales

One of the benefits of being so close to the coastline is the joy of the summer season, which provides resplendent evenings and gorgeous early mornings. Many of the homes that are put up for short sale tend to have an exceptional array of decks and balconies, so that practically every room in the house has access to a breathtaking view. The decks may be linked by a staircase, or they may be entirely separate. Generally speaking, homes that are closer to a nature reserve will tend to have expansive balconies that can only be accessed from the room from which they extend. This is partly to ensure the privacy of the occupants of that room, and also to create a cleaner look when the home is glimpsed from farther away.

Once inside, the homes here, which often sell for $200 a square foot, reveals themselves to be beacons of taste and refinement. Gorgeous tile work in the foyer leads to two sets of stairs, one of which proceeds to the lower wing of the home, and the other of which leads into the primary living areas, as well as the guest bedrooms. The kitchen is ordinarily first up on the visitation list, and is enormous in size. A variety of different drawers and beautifully appointed cabinets are finished with silver nickel handles or stainless steel knobs, and are mounted on tracks that betray no sound as they are gently extended and then placed back into the framework of the counter. The tops of the counters tend to be finished with the most elaborate of materials; speckled white granite or quartz is a frequent sight, although the remarkable tile patterns of the foyer may make a secondary appearance here. The kitchen leads to two different great rooms, one of which is decorated with a fireplace, and the other of which is designed to be a kind of informal celebration space. This secondary space is usually outfitted with a number of windows that make it excellent as a reception area for an outdoor celebration. In some instances, this room becomes dedicated to recreational pursuits, or is a great place for exercise equipment.

The bathrooms tend to have a full size shower stall which is accessed by sliding glass doors. In some cases, the shower is replaced by a luxurious bathtub that can accommodate two people at the same time. This bathtub is often surrounded by a marble shelf or other lavish frame which makes it easy to place soaps and other cleaning accoutrements nearby as the individual bathes. Adjustable features, including jets and pressurized streams of water, are also available at the flick of a switch.

The bedrooms often are a continued display of the inventive decor found in the foyer. Elaborate mosaics are nestled in between built-in bookcases and shelving, which creates a vibrant aesthetic while simultaneously making it a welcoming place to relax. Walk-in closets are accessed through slatted wooden doors that fold up when opened. The hallways, meanwhile, show off paneled wood and gorgeous recessed lighting. It is not uncommon to find a wet bar artfully placed along the wall of the finished basement space.

Geography

Known as one of the southernmost neighborhoods in Boston, this community is bordered by Dedham to the west, Milton to the east, Canton to the south, and the neighborhood of West Roxbury to the north. It’s also one of the most intriguingly shaped neighborhoods, with numerous arms and natural features giving it an irregular shape. Primarily a residential area, no major interstates pass through this region, although there are a number of commuter train stations providing service to Boston scattered throughout its many localities. These include the areas of West Street, Fairmount Hill, Georgetown, and Readville, each of which possesses its own distributive urban character. Bodies of water are prominent here, with the most notable being the Neponset River, which glides around the northeastern point of the city before splitting into numerous tributaries. The Mill Pond Reservation, which surrounds the titular pond, is located in Georgetown, and provides a stately place in which to enjoy the outdoors. The Smith Pond Playground, the Sherrin Woods, and the Neponset River Reservoir also welcome visitors and residents alike.
