The city of Haverhill in Essex County Massachusetts is 35 miles north of Boston and less than 20 miles to the Atlantic Ocean. The town sits on the banks of the Merrimack River, which continues its course through the town and then heads southwest before heading in a northern direction through the state. For city commuters, there are five exits within the town to enable residents to join I-95 and then I-93 for an easy commute to Boston. MBTA’s Reading/Haverhill line provides rail service to Boston’s North Station and MVRTA offers a local bus service to the town and other neighboring areas.

The town was once the center of the shoemaking industry and a large section of Buttonwoods Museum is dedicated to that industry with many fine examples of craftsmen’s work from the Victorian era. A few miles from downtown is Winnekenni Park Conservation Area of more than 700 acres. Within the park are two bodies of water, Kenoza Lake known as “Great Pond” and Lake Saltonstall where during summer months there is a swimming area, boating and picnicking. There are several trails within the park, which are very popular for walking, jogging, hiking and cross country skiing.
The town’s Main Street Historic District has 18th and 19th Century churches, is the center of civic activity and has some of the finest Renaissance homes built and owned by former, local businessmen. Harbor Place has revitalized the east end waterfront sector of the city with a boardwalk that goes from downtown and crosses the scenic Merrimack River ending in a newly constructed, residential district with new commercial units, retail shops and restaurants.
