Gloucester Condos
Gloucester is a city in Essex County and occupies most of the eastern end of Cape Ann Massachusetts 31 miles northeast of Boston. The Annisquam River flows through the center of the city and empties into Ipswich Bay. The Cape Ann Transportation Authority (CATA) provides a bus service to the nearby towns of Essex, Ipswich and Rockport. For commuters, MBTA’s Newburyport/Rockport Line serves the town and terminates at Boston’s North Station.

This scenic town with an active fishing community has a center for research on marine life and is renowned for its close proximity to George Bank and also the “Gorton” brand of seafood products. Known as “America’s Oldest Seaport,” the town has seven beaches, Cressy’s Beach overlooks the harbor, Good Harbor Beach has beautiful white sand, and the crescent shaped Half Moon Beach is a quiet cove located in Stage Fort Park. Unleashed dogs are allowed on some beaches off season October 1 through April 30, and information about the designated beaches and the allowable days is available on the town’s website. All beaches charge for parking and spaces are limited, so early arrival is recommended.
At the entrance to the harbor is an 84 yard granite jetty from which there are beautiful views of the harbor on one side and the ocean and Boston’s skyline on the other. Hammond Castle Museum displays a collection of Roman, medieval, and Renaissance artifacts and Cape Ann Museum focuses mainly on local art and on the town’s history of fishing and trading.
The town is famous for its 3 to12 minute walking segments and one leisurely walk will take you along picturesque Stacy Boulevard to a selection of bars where you can enjoy nightly live music or a fresh seafood meal.
There are many 19th and 20th Century restored homes just steps from the city’s restaurants, cafés, shops and beaches. These resplendent properties have retained their original, carved stair treads, wood paneled walls and high, beamed ceilings. Kitchens are bright and modern and are equipped with new cherry wood cabinetry, stainless steel appliances and modern bathrooms with either vanities or pedestal sinks. A one bedroom, one bathroom unit in one of these older homes, with 676 sq. ft., will cost around $265,000.
Consider a 2,300 sq. ft., two bedroom, two bathroom unit in a historical building with a huge eat-in kitchen, a Jacuzzi tub and rooftop deck with dramatic views of the city, for $575,000. Along the coastline and around the harbor are situated many million dollar homes with spectacular views of the ocean. These waterfront condos are never on the market very long. A newer 2,200 sq. ft. home in Magnolia with three bedrooms and three bathrooms with expansive views from living and dining rooms, a huge wrap-around porch and built on ocean facing gardens will cost around $1.4 million.
Not everyone can afford an expensive home, so if you are relocating to the area, a good place to start is by renting a home, which will allow you time to explore and assess the neighborhood in which you want to live. With a large percentage of the town’s properties near creeks, inlets, and coastline or on the peninsula, prices will greatly differ for each district.
The Home Owner Association (HOA) fees for expensive homes will be much higher than more moderately priced units. Most fees are based on the facilities offered and the cost of maintaining the development. Expect to pay higher fees if exterior maintenance, Master insurance as well as many recreational amenities is offered.
Condo living is not for everyone. City commuters and retirees enjoy this type of lifestyle. The costs of the fees far outweigh the convenience of having a communal clubhouse, a heated swimming pool and landscaping and snow removal. Commuters don’t have time for lawn cutting and retired people no longer want this task.
Moving home is classed as one of the most stressful things that can happen in life, so to make the process simpler, contact a local realtor in Gloucester who will help take away the anxiety of moving. If you are selling a home, the realtor will arrange viewings of the property and contact a title company to complete the closing procedure. If you are renting or buying a home, the realtor will accompany you to properties and point out any unusual features.
