The Neighborhoods

Charlestown offers a diverse real estate market. The neighborhood has both traditional wooden houses and brick row houses. It boasts many historic buildings as well as new builds. There are several desirable districts, each with their a unique character and attributes. Many of these small districts go by multiple names and overlap in some areas.

The waterfront area, often referred to as the Navy Yard, contains some of the higher prices of the neighborhood. It is a scenic area, reminiscent of a fishing village or coastal town. This district, which overlooks Boston Harbor, has a median price per square foot of $743.

Sullivan Square sits next to Somerville and is currently undergoing redevelopment. It has a more industrial feel and is an up-and-coming hotspot. It is convenient to the Orange line.

Bunker Hill or Monument Hill district is the area surrounding the monument of the Battle of Bunker Hill. It is broken into Bunker Hill North, Medford Street, or The Neck, and Bunker Hill East.

Over 70 percent of the housing available in The Neck, or Medford street area, was built before 1939. This area covers less than one square mile. It is located at the north end of the neighborhood, touching the Mystic River. Townhouses make up about 17 percent of housing in The Neck. It connects the peninsula to East Somerville.

The Gas Light district, or Thompson Square, is an energetic, dynamic historical area where properties are highly sought after. Most housing in this area is brick row houses. Prices in this area range from $500,000 to $800,000.
